While at work yesterday we were talking snow, and someone mentioned the "Snowflake Guy" in passing conversation. I had a vague recollection of hearing about him in one of my classes during college, but it is one of those tidbits of information that seem to get lost with the passing years. Now that Google is ingrained so deeply in our fabric, that all it took was a search with the keywords of "snowflake" and "guy" to come up with more information about this fellow.
During the late 1800's, while still in his teens, Wilson "Snowflake" Bentley took thousands of pictures of individual snowflakes. Snowflakes were captured on a black velvet sheet and placed on a microscope slide before they melted or sublimated. He photographed thousands of snowflakes, and originated the phrase "No two snowflakes look alike."
Because of the beautiful photographs he took ,and the eloquent style he used to describe his work in various magazines and his books, people were able to appreciate the intricate detail one of the many ways in which nature operates. Imagine the trillions of flakes and crystals that are created and destroyed each day, yet in theory, none of their designs are alike. -KM
